NORVIS is the annual full week-long early music summer school in County Durham which we’re proud to describe as one of the UK’s longest-established and friendliest early music summer schools. Join us for our 51st summer school, NORVIS 2023 (29 July – 5 August), at Barnard Castle School, next door to the splendid Bowes Museum.
‘My first NORVIS and now I understand why people say it is so wonderful. The ethos is spot on and permeates every part of the course. Positivity and kindness everywhere. Encouraged me to take lessons and get serious.’

NORVIS was founded in 1971 in Durham as The Northumbrian Recorder and Viol School by the late Layton and Christine Ring. Over time it has encompassed recorders, viols, lutes and early guitars, Baroque strings, harpsichord and voices and dance. Many participants play other instruments, e.g. other Renaissance and Baroque brass and woodwind, as part of the additional activities taking place. Our musical director is Andrew Fowler.
NORVIS is a registered charity, no 1014801.
