Musical developments in Italy from Monteverdi to Sammartini
An introduction to a selection of music spanning 150 years in Italy from Monteverdi to Sammartini with an opportunity to work using the full range of recorders from soprano to bass. This class will focus on the recorder technique of players in the group that is required to perform this music with style and musicality.

Focus: Acquiring an effective ‘Practice Tool Kit’.
Discussing and acquiring a variety of practice ‘tools’ to help get to grips with those ‘pesky’ bars which keep tripping you up; and to help develop suitable interpretative detail such as varied articulation and simple ornamentation.

Baroque Flute – Annabel Knight
The French Flute
We will take an indulgent dive into early French baroque flute repertoire, exploring beautiful suites, solos, duos and trios by Jacques Hotteterre and Joseph Bodin de Boismortier. Deepening an understanding of flute technique and style in the court of Louis XIV and XV, we will use excerpts from Hotteterre’s famous method book L’Art de Preluder, to work on ornamentation, tone colour, fingering and phrasing, before dipping into his delicate and refined solo suites and ensemble pieces. Boismortier’s elegant and tuneful Trios for three flutes will give an opportunity to work on group playing and tuning.
This class will be at A=415. We will use both modern and eighteenth century music editions. Participants do not necessarily need to be confident in reading French violin clef as modern editions will be available.

Matters of technique will be discussed as they arise from the consort music from the 16th and 17th centuries including composers such as Coprario, the Ferraboscos, Holborne, Byrd, Lawes and Jenkins.
Students wanting material to practise are invited to contact us and we will get in touch. If you have not been to NORVIS before, please provide us with an indication of your experience as a consort player, and any problems or matters of technique which you would like to address during the course.

The lute and guitar class is organised on a flexible basis according to the needs of the students. Topics will include solo repertory, technique and ensemble playing skills. A collection of graded solos pieces and duets will be available to download HERE from the NORVIS website.
